ARE NATURISM HEALTH BENEFITS REAL?

It seems so blatantly obvious to me that my body benefits from naturism that I suppose I often don’t challenge my own assumption too much or look to closely. I don’t need to. I know the answer, and (spoiler alert!) to save you the trouble of scrolling to the end to see the answer … it is YES! They are real!

Sunshine and Vitamin D
I’m going to start with this, much touted, default naturism response when confronted with a discussion on naturism health benefits. Yes, as naturists we tend to get more sunshine on more places on our bodies than others who may live alongside us. Is Vitamin D good for us? Yes, and yes, our bodies create it when exposed to sunshine. Do we need to be naked to make Vitamin D? Of course not. 10 to 30 minutes exposure to sunshine a few times a week wearing shorts and a vest will likely give you all the vitamin D you need. Here’s the thing though. Who is most likely to go outside and get a dose of vitamin D without trying to? Naturists, always looking for some sun time and to commune with nature, that’s who! Weirdest thing, when I first became a naturist, I could have sworn my skin improved and looked fresher and younger. The sunshine may have had a lot to do with that. Our bodies are designed for living in the light (as are our minds). As with anything though, to much of a good thing is a bad thing. Skin damage and skin cancer from UV exposure is real, so you don’t want to overdo it, get sunburned or stop taking precautions! Easy does it!

Stress
Stress may be one of the world’s biggest killers. Everything from Heart Attacks through to Cancer has at some point been blamed on stress. We know it isn’t good for us, but increasingly we find it more and more difficult to escape. I give you naturism, a sure fire way of escaping or at very least reducing stress.

Popular methods of stress management include meditation, yoga, and exercise. Feeling in tune with your body and your environment, even for a short while is self-centering and meditative; heart rates slow, breathing regulates and our fight or flight response wanes. Just ten minutes outside, cloths-free can make a whole day feel different. Combine that time with the methods of of stress management already mentioned and you have a winning stress-beating combination!

Stress is also combated by your bodies production of serotonin – the chemical that essentially makes your brain feel happy! The relationship between stress is a little circular; stress reduces serotonin production and serotonin reduces stress, so things that boost serotonin are important. Guess what boosts serotonin. Serotonin levels are increased by increased exposure to sunlight, increased physical activity and increased oxygen intake. Sound familiar? Naturism! That may actually be one of the big factors in the chemical reason we enjoy naturism. Simply put is literally makes us happy!
